With an intriguing culture and history, it comes as no surprise that the culinary scene in Brazil is the same. Here are seven of Brazil’s tastiest foods to indulge in, with a mix of local, African and European influences.

1. Feijoada

Feijoada

Regarded as the national dish of Brazil, feijoada is comfort food for the soul with Portuguese roots. The slow-cooked stew is comprised of black beans, pork, sausages and beef. It’s served on a bed of rice to soak up the divine sauce, with collard greens and orange slices to balance the richness.

2. Acarajé

Acarajé

Acarajé is a perfect snack to tide you over between meals. Shrimp is stuffed into a dough made of black-eyed peas, deep-fried, and served with a spicy dipping sauce. While this savoury ball has African origins, Salvador is especially famous for their acarajé, often found in markets or at street food stalls.

3. Pão de Queijo

Pão de Queijo

What better way to start the day than with a freshly baked, cheesy bread roll? Pão de Queijo is a favourite amongst locals for breakfast, commonly found in bakeries or cafes. With a crisp exterior, yet soft and chewy inside, we don’t blame you for reaching for more! These rolls are made from tapioca flour, making them gluten-free, too.

4. Moqueca

Seafood stew, Brazil

If you find yourself along the coast of Brazil, you will likely find moqueca on the menu. This coconut milk-based stew is made with aromatics and plenty of fresh seafood.

5. Churrasco

Brazilian BBQ

Churrasco is an absolute highlight when in Brazil! Brazilian BBQ is world-famous, known for its moreish flavour profile on any ingredients cooked over open flames. You will find churrascarias across Brazil – local steakhouses where you can have all-you-can-eat meat served straight to your table!

6. Brigadeiro

Brigadeiro

We can’t forget a dessert option…enter brigadeiro. These chocolate truffles are eaten during any kind of celebration. A traditional brigadeiro is made with condensed milk and covered in chocolate sprinkles, however you can find several variations – like coconut.

7. Caipirinha

Caipirinha

While a caipirinha isn’t a food, it would be amiss of us to leave out Brazil’s national drink. From casual beach bars in Rio de Janeiro to rooftop bars in São Paulo, a caipirinha is a delicious cocktail made with lime, sugar and cachaça (a sugarcane spirit).
