Head to the southern end of Japan’s main island, Honshu, and you’ll be greeted by Hiroshima. Hiroshima is the capital city of the Chugoku region, and its centre was raised to the ground when the US Army dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on August 6, 1945. All eyes remained on the city as it rebuilt itself and today, it draws in over 2 million visitors each year.
In order to take in the best of this incredible city, here are seven of the best photo spots in Hiroshima.
1. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is a sacred area found right in the middle of the city. The park was developed to remember the horrific attack during WWII on the city and its direct and indirect victims. Here, you will find the fascinating, yet sombre, Peace Memorial Museum, the Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims, and the Genbaku (A-Bomb) Dome. This building is one of the few to have survived the atomic bomb and locals chose to preserve it as a multi-faceted symbol – to remind us of the destructive power of nuclear weapons, as well as hope for world peace. You can capture some excellent photos using the reflection of the river, especially at sunset.
2. Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine is home to one of Japan’s most easily recognised torii gates. No matter what time of day you visit, the changing tide will present you with an amazing photo opportunity. At high tide, the torii gate appears to be floating in the middle of the water; while at low tide, you can walk right out to it to get up close and personal.
3. Hiroshima Castle

Despite its simple black and white colourings, Hiroshima Castle is a bold landmark. Another landmark that was rebuilt after WWII, it features classic architecture and a picturesque moat that make it a photographer’s dream. You can almost feel its historic might from when it was the economical centre of Hiroshima.
4. Mount Misen

Found on Miyajima Island, Mount Misen boasts one of the best photo spots in Hiroshima. If you’re feeling adventurous, choose one of three summit trails that can take up to 2 ½ hours; or for a more relaxing route, take the cable car (with a short walk at the end). From here, get your camera ready for 360-degree views of Seto Inland Sea and neighbouring islands.
5. Hondori Shopping Street

For an authentic taste of everyday life, head to Hondori Shopping Street. It’s a photographer’s paradise with signs, lights, locals, shops and restaurants galore. Its vibrant atmosphere makes for a fun visit.
6. Orizuru Tower Rooftop

For a panoramic view of the city, we recommend visiting the rooftop observation deck in Orizuru Tower. Conveniently located next to the Peace Memorial Park, you’ll have a birds eye view of not just Hiroshima, but the park and its important landmarks. In true Japanese style, the open-air observation deck is built out of wood with simple lines to let the views take centre stage.
7. Shukkeien Garden

The Japanese are renowned for their style of effortlessly manicured gardens, and Shukkeien Garden is no exception. Rebuilt after the atomic bomb attack, this traditional garden presents you with a host of photo spots. There are bright red arched bridges, tranquil teahouses and perfect landscapes throughout. Cherry blossoms in spring, and the changing colours of maple trees in autumn, add to its seasonal appeal.
Whilst in Japan, a visit to Hiroshima is a no-brainer and a vital part of Japan’s history. Discover this city on a Globus or Cosmos tour to Japan.
