Scotland has a rich cultural heritage like no other. The Scottish spirit is unique, intertwining itself amongst music, dance, food and historic traditions. Here are some ways on how to celebrate like a local in Scotland.
Hogmanay

Hogmanay is Scotland’s beloved New Year celebration so get ready to party! You’ll find Ceilidh dancing, street parties, music and plenty of Scottish whisky to be drunk. If luck is on your New Year wish list, take advantage of the ‘first footing’ tradition whereby the first person to cross the threshold at home after midnight will have luck for the year ahead.
Edinburgh Fringe Festival

It’s incredible to think that Edinburgh hosts the world’s largest arts festival. In a nod to the country’s deep appreciation for the performing arts, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is a special event to attend. From theatre and comedy to art installations and dance, book your tickets early if visiting Scotland in August. There are over 1,000 performances to choose from, held in venues of all sizes (grand theatres to street performances) which only add to the festival’s charm.
Highland Games

With some origins dating back to the 11th century, the Highland Games are one of Scotland’s oldest traditions. These are held in towns and villages across the country, celebrating Scottish culture with music, dancing and athletic competitions (which are by far the most exciting with hammer throwing and caber tossing). Keep your eyes peeled if attending the Braemar Gathering in Aberdeenshire as members of the royal family often attend, too.
Up Helly Aa

Up Helly Aa is held in Shetland every January. This Viking-inspired festival is an appreciation for Scotland’s ancient Norse heritage. The biggest is held in Lerwick where Viking torchbearers parade through the town before burning a traditional Viking longship. This symbolises the end of the Yule season, and the beginning of longer days.
Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Often on peoples’ bucket lists, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo draws in crowds every August. This event showcases exceptional military precision, pageantry and camaraderie with military bands, performers and dancers from around the world. And the best part? It’s held at the foot of Edinburgh Castle so you have a magnificent backdrop throughout.
