There are many reasons why people love to visit Germany. One of those is for a multitude of towns that elicit a unique fairytale atmosphere with their well-preserved architecture, cobblestone streets and history. Here are four of our favourite fairytale towns to visit in Germany.
1. Rothenburg ob der Tauber

If some of the Harry Potter movies have been filmed here, you just know that Rothenburg ob der Tauber evokes a magical feel. From its colourful half-timbered houses to medieval Town Hall, Rothenburg is a delight to explore. Its well-preserved town walls still have gate houses and towers that you can visit, as well as a covered walkway to see the town as if you were a guardsman in old times. All this is topped off with the largest Christmas shop in Europe! The Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Village is open year-round for you to get your Christmas fix.
2. Miltenberg

Located an hour from Frankfurt along the Main River, Miltenberg is a quintessential German town with some fascinating history. It provided an integral trading base for the Romans who arrived in 155 AD, with their primary structure the current Miltenburg fortress. The township has some of the classic half-timbered houses that Germany is renowned for, with the oldest building dating back to 1339; and it is home to Germany’s oldest inn – Hotel Zum Riesen – which was built in 1590! Complete with gorgeous views of the Main, this fairytale town is a must-visit.
3. Rüdesheim am Rhein

Found smack bang in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site-recognised Rhine Valley, the tiny town of Rüdesheim am Rhein is a German gem. Its population of just 10,000 residents is flanked by valleys filled with Riesling vineyards and epic walking trails. Fall in love with its central Drosselgasse as soon as you set foot on its cobblestone path, lined with cosy wine taverns and climbing vines that add to its fairytale-like vibes. This road was historically the loading area for the transport of wine between 1500 – 1800 when Rüdesheim was an important port for wine trade.
4. Heidelberg

Finally, Heidelberg is sure to capture your heart right from the start with its mix of romance and charm. As you wander through its UNESCO World Heritage Site-recognised Old Town, you’ll find yourself at the foot of the hill that holds the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. The castle attracts over one million visitors annually with its centuries of history, spectacular views, and the world’s biggest (former) wine vat. If visiting in June, July or September, you may bear witness to Schlossbeleuchtung – the Castle Illumination event held only three times a year. Watch the city come alive as the castle lights up, complete with a magnificent fireworks display.
Germany is certainly a hot destination to explore. Discover these fairytale towns on an Avalon Waterways river cruise, and a Globus or Cosmos tour.
