Discover temples
Thailand honours a centuries-old tradition of following Buddhism as their main religion. Therefore, you’ll find temples across the country. Not only are they used for places of worship, but they are community and educational hubs, too. Here are three notable temples that you’ll visit on your Cosmos tour:
- Wat Pho, Bangkok: also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, this eight-hectare space is one of Bangkok’s largest and oldest temple complexes. The golden reclining Buddha himself is 46 metres long, only just squeezing into the temple around him
- Wat Si Chum, Sukhothai: this temple’s roof has disintegrated which creates a unique open-air space for Wat Si Chum’s seated Buddha. The Buddha peeks out at you through an opening in one of the walls as you approach
- Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai: this temple features beautiful northern Thai architecture and sits atop a mountain. You can take a tram or climb 306 steps to reach the top, flanked by naga, mythical sea serpents.
Explore from the water
Thailand is known for its rivers, so we do recommend exploring from the water. Bangkok is known as the ‘Venice of the East’ for its network of canals (klongs). Whether you’re exploring by day or embarking on a dinner cruise on a traditional rice barge, it’s a wonderful way to learn about history and culture. Further north at the famous Golden Triangle area, you’ll find the Mekong River where Thailand meets Myanmar and Laos. Jump on a boat and sail across borders to see how Laos locals live.
Awaken your tastebuds
Thai food is famous for its use of fresh ingredients, creating a unique blend of sweet, savoury, salty and sour in every mouthful. Whether you’re enjoying a steaming plate of the iconic pad thai on a low stool at a night market or choosing an indulgent Khantoke dinner and show (complete with Khantoke-style platters on low tables and dances by hill tribes), you can’t go wrong.
Meet the locals
Head for the hills of Doi Mae Salong to meet several hill tribes. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, learning about the heritage, history and daily lives of the Yao, Lisu and Akha tribes. They may live simple lives, but they want for nothing. For a different kind of ‘local’ experience, meeting locals also extends to visiting the Elephant Nature Park. This park was established in the 1990’s as a haven for rescued, and orphaned, elephants.
