We hope this list of essentials answers the ‘what to pack for an Avalon Waterways river cruise’ question for you!
Dinner attire
In line with our relaxed luxury ethos, we don’t expect anyone to dress to the nines for dinner. Casual, or smart casual, is the vibe. Most of our male guests choose to wear a long- or short-sleeved collared shirt with chinos or pants; while female guests choose to wear dresses or pants. If you’re cruising in humid environments like on the Mekong, Amazon or Galapagos Rivers, please wear whatever cool clothing you feel comfortable in!
Swimming togs
For those cruising in Europe, you have the option to cool off on our Sky Deck. Relax in our whirlpool, or in the pool on the brand new Avalon Alegria.
Sun protection
These are travel essentials, not just for a river cruise! Don’t forget to pack a hat, sunglasses and sunblock.
Insect repellent
For those joining us on the Mekong, Amazon or Galapagos Rivers, a good insect repellent will be your best friend for your onshore excursions.
Travel adaptor
Multi-country travel adaptors are very common these days. This is handy for travels across borders before and after your Avalon cruise. All Avalon ships in Europe are also equipped with USB charging ports.
Reusable drink bottle
All Avalon ships in Europe feature a water station in the Club Lounge, making it easy to fill your reusable drink bottle before an excursion. Choose from regular, sparkling or flavoured waters.
Small backpack
A small backpack is essential for your onshore excursions. These usually last anywhere between 2 – 4 hours maximum, so we recommend packing a drink bottle and a jumper or raincoat depending on the weather.
Raincoat
We all know that Mother Nature can be unpredictable, even in summer! Pack a raincoat or windbreaker that will keep you warm and dry for unexpected downpours or wind gusts.
Active wear
We like all our guests to feel comfortable when out and about, and active wear can often be the best option here – especially for our Active excursions. This includes a pair of comfortable walking shoes will ensure zero blisters and (less) sore feet at the end of the day. You’ll also meet your Adventure Host when cruising with us in Europe. Not only will they be your point of contact for any energetic activities, but they will host early morning yoga sessions.
Travel credit card and cash
Much of the world uses credit cards as a form of payment these days. Do your research on the best travel credit card for you before you leave – your bank may have a great deal, or a generic one like Wise is a good option, too. We also recommend carrying a small amount of local currency. This can be useful in situations like buying a small gift from a local market, using a restroom, or tipping a Local Guide.
AvalonGO app
This isn’t something to pack, but to download before your Avalon river cruise. Our complimentary AvalonGO app includes a host of pre- and on-trip information right at your fingertips. This includes your cruise itinerary, city recommendations and GPS navigation that can be used offline and without data.
A book
While you may be too busy socialising or exploring, we hope you can find a little bit of downtime during your cruise! Unwind in your Panorama Suite, or in one of the airy common spaces, with a hot drink and a good book. We can’t guarantee that you won’t be distracted by the view though!
