No matter what is next on your bucket list, a classic city sightseeing tour is one of the best ways to get a feel for a new destination. Avalon Waterways includes one in almost every city or town that you visit on a river cruise. Here are some of our favourite Classic excursions with Avalon Waterways.
Rouen, France
Rouen may be small, but it has a mighty history. It first began in 1431 when martyr, Joan of Arc, was burnt at the stake for heresy; then fast forward to World War II when much of the city was bombed. On this fascinating walking excursion, you’ll discover Rouen’s most famous monuments and some lesser-known gems. Your local guide will highlight things like specific stained-glass windows that were protected as the war edged closer, and its Gothic church that Claude Monet himself painted. It’s hard not to be charmed by this medieval city!
Heidelberg, Germany
The town of Heidelberg was actually planned and built around its castle, so it’s no wonder that it draws in travellers from all around the world. This excursion is the perfect balance of a guided tour with time at leisure. Once your local guide has walked you through the castle (including its Great Vat, the ‘World’s Largest Wine Barrel’), it’s time for you to walk down to the town centre to explore. After a bite to eat at one of Heidelberg’s traditional restaurants, history enthusiasts may choose to take the funicular back to the castle to see its exhibits and interiors. Or if you prefer to stroll through the town’s charming streets, there are plenty of shops to peruse and cafes to relax in with a coffee.
Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Another city greatly affected by WWII, Rotterdam was practically raised to the ground – except for a church, the town hall and post office! Incredibly, the foundations of these three buildings were strong enough to withstand the bombs. Rotterdam is now a glorious mix of modern and old-style architecture. Your city tour will begin by coach, showing you the highlights, before ascending 96 metres high up the Euromast for jaw-dropping views. From here, explore the city on foot including the gravity-defying cube houses, and a stop at the city market to peruse local produce and try a fresh stroopwafel and lemonade.
Benedictine Abbey of Melk, Austria
There’s nothing quite like the Benedictine Abbey of Melk. Rising up from its hilltop perch, its yellow and white exterior beckons all who sail past on the Danube River. Not only is the exterior architecture and gardens something to marvel at, but the interior is just as special. In particular, its library is home to hand-copied books that predate the printing press. Wander to the cute township of Melk itself afterwards where you might want to try a shot of apricot liqueur, made famous by this area of Austria.
Zaanse Schans
This full afternoon optional excursion into the Netherlands’s countryside is one of our guests’ favourites! It’s full of quintessential Dutch activities so you’ll come away feeling like you’ve really explored the heart of Dutch culture. Tour a working windmill, visit a wooden clog business to see how these iconic footwears are created, see classic Dutch houses, and finish off with a tasty cheese farm experience.
