A river cruise through Hungary is sure to surprise with its special folklore traditions, mouthwatering cuisine and spectacular scenery. While many flock to Budapest, one of Europe’s most dynamic capital cities, there is more to Hungary than meets the eye. Here are some fascinating places to visit in Hungary on an Avalon Waterways river cruise.

Pécs

Pecs

Situated near the Hungary-Serbia border, Pécs has had close ties with its Serbian neighbours since the Ottoman era. This has woven itself into the city it is today, creating a fabulous mix of cultures and earning the nickname, the Cultural Pearl of Hungary. A highlight of your excursion to Pécs is visiting the early-Christian Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its underground tombs date back to the fourth century, and you can still see historic murals. Finish off your time in Pécs with a soul-stirring organ concert.

Mohács

Mohacs

Mohács is famous for being one of the first independent settlements founded by Hungarians. This sleepy harbour town sits on the Danube River and features historical statues, distinctive churches and even a working mill (that still produces stone-ground grains)! On your Avalon Waterways river cruise, you’ll have the choice of discovering this charming Hungarian town either by bike or on foot. While Avalon doesn’t offer cruises in January, your trip may coincide with the famous Mohács Busó Walk – a carnival to say farewell to winter.

Visegrád

Visegrad

There’s no other place in Hungary where you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time, quite like Visegrád. Avalon offers an Active or Discovery excursion depending on your personal preference.

Join a hiking tour through the Danube-Ipoly National Park to the ancient castle and tower ruins where Count Dracula was imprisoned in the 15th century. Alternatively, attend an interactive medieval knights tournament at Visegrád’s Lower Castle! You can wield a sword for yourself after fighting and targeting demonstrations by members of the St George Knightly Order. Afterwards, explore Palotahaz – a reconstructed market building where you’ll meet local chefs, stonemasons, smiths, potters and papermakers.

Danube Bend

Danube Bend

The Danube Bend is the Danube’s answer to the Rhine Gorge on the Rhine River. This stretch of river is coveted by many for its impressive scenery – charming towns, plentiful vineyards and lush forests. If you’re onboard our Active & Discovery on the Danube river cruise, we time it so that you’re sailing through this picturesque area whilst dining on tasty Hungarian specialties at dinner. The next day, you may choose to partake in a canoe excursion for a unique perspective of the Bend region.

Esztergom

Esztergom Basilica

Esztergom has a strong history having previously been the city where many Hungarian Kings had their coronations. Join your Local Guide for a fascinating tour through part of the Carpathian Basin, a visit to the ancient Esztergom Basilica and a tasting of traditional palinka (a fruit brandy) in the cellar. If you prefer something more active, explore the nearby Pilis Mountains on an e-bike. There’s a wonderful reward for all your hard work with a magnificent view from the top of the Dobogoko climb.
