Gyeongbokgung Palace is the best way to begin your time in South Korea. Built in 1395, it was the official royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty and remains the largest and most impressive to this day. You’ll tour the palace grounds and watch the traditional ceremonial changing of the guard. If you want to up the ante, you also have the chance to don a hanbok – Korean traditional outfit – while there. These come in an array of colours and are a truly special part of Korea’s heritage.

Bukchon Hanok Village

Step back in time when you set foot on the streets of Bukchon Hanok Village. Over 900 hanoks (traditional homes) have been restored to their true form as they were during the Joseon Dynasty. Not only are these homes and streets excellent to explore, but there are also many cafes and restaurants to visit.

Join your Local Guide for a visit to the world’s most fortified border, the DMZ. Set up as a buffer between North and South Korea in 1953, it runs over 257 kilometres long and 4 kilometres wide. While a sobering reminder of the divide in Korea, you’ll come away with a greater understanding of its history. Highlights include the Bridge of Freedom (built to give consolation to the spirits of those who passed away yearning for their home in North Korea) and the Dora Observatory (giving you views across the DMZ and the beginnings of North Korea).

Learn the art of sunmodo

You’ve heard of meditation, and you’ve heard of martial arts. But Koreans have combined the two into sunmodo, or meditative martial arts. On this Globus tour, you’ll visit Golgulsa Temple where Buddhist monks will take you through the basics of sunmodo. This interactive class will show you how this meditation form develops mindfulness through movement.

Gamcheon

Likened to the colourful houses of Burano in Italy, Gamcheon in Busan will brighten your day. Refugees of the Korean War are the geniuses behind the winding alleyways and layered streets. Still very much residential, it is also an artistic hub with galleries, murals and sculptures. Gamcheon is a real highlight on this tour so enjoy exploring the village and pop into one of its local cafes.
