We’ve all subscribed to the idea of breakfast being the most important meal of the day. Therefore, we like to continue this ethos while travelling. Here are ten delicious breakfast foods from around the world.
1. Yoghurt with nuts and honey – Greece
Greek yoghurt is one of the thickest and creamiest you’ll ever try! Best served simply so that you can savour it, nuts and honey are perfect toppings to balance its acidity.
2. Pho – Vietnam
While popular for any mealtime, pho is the crowd favourite for breakfast in Vietnam. If you’re an early riser, two common sights are locals doing tai chi in parks or by lakes and sitting at a streetside stall for a bowl of pho. With protein and carbohydrates, it’s a great way to start the day.
3. Bagels – New York City
Bagels are the perfect grab-and-go breakfast for New York locals going about their busy lives. Made popular and easily accessible by local bodegas and delicatessens, popular choices include cream cheese, salmon and capers, and a bacon, egg and cheese combination.
4. Puri/poori – India
A hit of spice and flavour is the only way to start the day in India. A typical breakfast consists of puri (or poori), fluffy bread deep-fried to perfection and served with a flavoursome potato curry.
5. Pingado – Brazil
Pingado is the Brazilian’s take on coffee. This essential morning drink is steamed milk with a splash of strong coffee and a lick of sugar. Crusty French-style bread accompanies it, with your choice of butter, cheese and/or ham.
6. Ful medames – Egypt
Like the pyramids, ful medames is an ancient dish that has fueled Egyptians for centuries. Fava beans are stewed overnight with cumin, parsley, onion, lemon, parsley and chilli. The next morning, hard-boiled eggs and pita bread are served alongside a bowl of warm, or cold, ful medames.
7. Kahvalti – Turkey
Turkey is world-famous for their impressive breakfast spreads. It’s a must-do! Your table will be filled to the brim with an assortment of breads, cheese, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, spicy sausages, spreads, and eggs. All this is topped with a traditional tea or coffee.
8. Liver sausage – Germany
It wouldn’t be a German breakfast without sausage! Germans love liver sausage for breakfast, sliced onto bread with cheese and even another type of sliced meat.
9. Rice with sides – Japan
A traditional Japanese breakfast can be compared to a work of art. Picture a tray with small ceramic dishes, each containing a delicious tidbit. A bowl of steamed rice is accompanied by miso soup, pickled vegetables, fish or tofu, and dried seaweed – covering all your bases for a balanced breakfast.
10. Croissant – France
The French don’t believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Instead, they place greater emphasis on lunch and dinner. Coffee is non-negotiable in the morning; however, some locals think that anything extra isn’t necessary. If you are feeling peckish, a croissant from a boulangerie (bakery) is an easy food to pick up.
