With July 30 marking International Friendship Day, here is Part III of our ten cities to visit with your best friend series.

1. Arles, France

Arles is a city with plenty to its name, making it a small, but diverse, place to visit with your best friend. It was primarily developed by the Romans and was the home of Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. As you stroll its streets, you’ll find colourful homes decorated with climbing vines, an array of (fairly) well-preserved Roman ruins, cute sidewalk cafes, and plenty of Provençal flair.

2. Istanbul, Turkey

With its prime location in the middle of the East and West, Turkey has been influenced in its growth by the Balkans, Greece, and North Africa. Of course, the country has also created its own culture, which is reflected in its largest city, Istanbul. This means you’ll find a unique mix of cuisines. Start your day off with a traditional Turkish breakfast full of all sorts of tasty bits and pieces; grab a doner kebab for lunch on-the-go; snack on a simit (a Turkish pretzel) or pide (a boat-shaped pizza) when three-thirty-itis hits; and end your day with a hearty stew and baklava.

3. Yosemite National Park, USA

If you and your best friend love the great outdoors, Yosemite National Park is the place to be. Take your pick from over 1,200 kilometres of hiking trails, a range of cycling routes, river rafting and rock climbing. There is certainly no shortage of breath taking scenes throughout the park, from the sheer face of El Capitan to standing amongst giants in the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

4. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is perfect for a cheap and cheerful holiday. The ‘Golden City’ has an abundance of free, or affordable, options for travellers. For example, one ticket to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Prague Castle is AUD$29 or NZD$32; and doing a self-guided walking tour is a fun option (and free!). Beer gardens are a highlight in Prague since beer is cheaper than water, and a Czech dinner of a main, dessert and drink will only set you back (approximately) AUD$27 or NZD$30.

5. Edinburgh, Scotland

Auld Reekie, or ‘Old Smokey’, is Scotland’s beloved capital city and one to tick off your bucket lists. Despite having more than its fair share of rain and wind, Edinburgh’s charm will be enough to warm you up. We love hopping between its Old and New Towns to really get a feel for the city. Feel like you’ve stepped back in time in the medieval Old Town as you explore its winding alleyways, historic buildings and famous Royal Mile; while the New Town is a breath of fresh air with its manicured squares and gardens, Georgian-esque architecture and a variety of eateries.

6. Lima, Peru

Another foodie-centric city, Lima is regarded as the gastronomic capital of Peru (and quite possibly, South America). For example, ceviche hails from South America but was developed in Lima. There are even cevicherías, dedicated to serving the very best of this fresh fish meal. Food aside, Lima has plenty of museums if that is up your alley. Whether you prefer to learn about the pre-Hispanic era of Peru at the National Museum of Anthropology & Archaeology or expand your art knowledge at the Museum of Art of Lima, there’s one for you.

7. Montréal, Canada

With its distinct French vibes combined with Canadian roots, Montréal presents an unforgettable trip. Much of the city has French names, like the Place Jacques-Cartier and Notre Dame Basilica; and it’s home to the legendary Cirque du Soleil circus. Montréal has some quirky neighbourhoods, too – check out ones like Mile End for its hipster vibes and vintage shops. And to top it off, indulge in as many dishes of poutine as you can!

8. Kanazawa, Japan

Kanazawa is great for a friends trip. It’s a little off-the-beaten-path, easy to get around on foot or public transport, and gives an insight into what a traditional Japanese town would have been like. Kanazawa was an important castle town during the Edo Period with samurai neighbourhoods surrounding it. You can still walk through some of these areas which gives you an insight into part of Japan’s history. Japan is also world-famous for their traditional crafts – think gold leaf decorations and tea ceremonies – and Kanazawa was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art in 2009. There are many ways to immerse yourself in these, from meeting local craftsmen, cooking lessons and visiting the National Crafts Museum.

9. Cinque Terre, Italy

With no cars or buses in sight, and just the sea and five cliffside villages to contend with, Cinque Terre is a true North Italy paradise. Touted as one of the most photographed places in Italy, Cinque Terre is instantly recognisable with its colourful buildings set against the azure waters. We recommend travelling in the off or shoulder seasons to avoid the summer crowds and heat. The best part is that you can return time and time again to visit/stay in a different village each time, or you can base yourself in one village and walk or train between the five.

10. Ghent, Belgium

Occasionally overlooked by the more famous Brussels and Bruges, Ghent is an architectural haven. There is a wonderful combination of large market squares, sunny terraces and both old and new buildings. It’s really neat to go from walking amongst the ruins of the St Bavo abbey to seeing the De Krook municipal library with its straight lines and glass walls.

So, what are you waiting for? These ten cities to visit with your best friend are calling and it’s time to make those plans together. Take a look at an Avalon Waterways river cruise, and coach tours with Globus or Cosmos
