While the 4th of July may not mean a huge deal to those of us residing in the Southern Hemisphere, experiencing a fireworks fuelled Independence Day celebration in America is definitely something you’ll want to add to your travel bucket list. From its iconic cities to its cool beach towns, the U.S. has a never-ending list of epic destinations that come alive in the summer months commemorating the star-spangled occasion. So, grab a Budweiser, fire up the BBQ and take a read of our list of five places to celebrate the 4th of July.
New York City
Incredible firework displays have become synonymous with America’s national day and New York provides no exception, with millions gathering each year to watch the phenomenal Macy’s fireworks set over Brooklyn Bridge. For the best views pop into one of Manhattan’s many rooftop bars, take an all-inclusive cruise around the harbour, or head to the very top of the 541-metre high One World Observatory.
Washington D.C.
Where better to celebrate America’s birthday than in its capital city? Be sure to catch the celebration parade along Constitution Avenue for your fill of elaborate floats and fife-and-drum bands, before snagging a spot on the West Lawn to watch A Capitol Fourth – the star-studded, pageantry-filled concert that always precedes the grand finale of fireworks over the National Mall.
Lake Tahoe
Swap city lights for wide-open skies in Lake Tahoe, offering a weekend-long extravaganza full of beach parties, parades and an array of outdoor activities. Don’t miss the Lights on the Lake pyrotechnics display which can be seen from all over town. The reflections on the lake along with the Sierra Nevada mountains serving as a backdrop makes this one of the most visually stunning displays in the country.
Myrtle Beach
If it’s a quintessential beach-side celebration that you’re after, look no further than Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This vibrant coastal town has plenty of events on offer, from patriotic street parties to boat parades. Spend the evening at Surfside Beach Pier where you can enjoy fair rides, freshly grilled hot dogs, and local craft beer.
Philadelphia
Being the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence, Philly truly goes all out when it comes to July 4th celebrations, hosting seven full days of festivities. During the week the city is buzzing with events such as outdoor movies, historic block parties, street performances and more. On the day itself head to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for one of the country’s biggest free concerts. Here you’ll find five blocks of games, live music, and cultural events.
