Iconic landmarks like the CN Tower are very much a part of Toronto. However, let’s go beyond the big guns to see what flies beneath the radar in this city. Let’s discover Toronto’s hidden gems.
Neighbourhoods
Toronto has several underrated neighbourhoods. Here are three to get you started…
- Greektown: as the largest Greek neighbourhood in North America, there’s no doubt that you’ll be immersed in its vibrant culture. Also known as The Danforth (as its main street is on Danforth Avenue), there is Greek clothing, cosy tavernas, colourful murals and tasty bakeries to peruse.
- The Beaches: this wealthy area is a joy to discover. Take a stroll along its 3-kilometre waterfront boardwalk, soak up the sun on one of its beaches, or take in the Edwardian homes.
- Roncesvalles Village: colloquially known as ‘Roncy’, this was formerly Toronto’s Little Poland after WWII. You can still find Polish influences dotted around, but we also love the weekly Monday market for its local and artisan produce, and boutique shops.
Museums
If you’re a museum fan, incorporate one of these hidden gems into your itinerary:
- Bata Shoe Museum: take a walk through over 4,500 years of history! From Egyptian sandals and wooden clogs to sneakers and Chinese bound-foot shoes, this is a quirky visit.
- Museum of Contemporary Art: not only does MOCA feature over 1,000 artists’ work across 200+ exhibitions, but the museum is housed in a neat, converted factory building.
- Gardiner Museum: discover a wide range of history and contemporary ceramics at this niche museum, from international artists to a special nod to local artists, too.
Green spaces
We love a green space, particularly in a city when you want to retreat from the hustle and bustle:
- Toronto Islands: these sand bars-turned-islands have developed into their own little hub. The 15 islands are connected via bridges and are a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Cycle, kayak, swim, or fish – the choice is yours!
- Allan Gardens: we adore the conservatory area here! Beginning in the 1870’s, there are six different houses to explore, each with their own micro-climate and plants.
- Tommy Thompson Park: bring your binoculars to one of the best places for bird watching in Toronto! It’s home to over 300 species of birds.
Culinary experiences
Two thirds of Toronto’s top 20 restaurants feature different cuisines, so you’re guaranteed a delicious dining experience no matter your budget or tastes.
- Various street food markets: Toronto is at the forefront of culinary trends, so it comes as no surprise that street food markets have taken off. Try items like Filipino sisig fries, Taiwanese sausages and Indian noodles.
- Evergreen Brick Works: developed as a space to connect and learn about community, nature and sustainable practices, this disused quarry is now home to a farmers market, cafe and several food trucks.
- St Lawrence Market: this historic space (dating back to 1850) offers permanent retail businesses, office spaces and restaurants, as well as three different markets selling everything from fresh produce, artisan goods and baked treats.
These are just some of Toronto’s hidden gems just waiting for you. Visit this vibrant city on a Globus or Cosmos tour.
